Cocoa Island is the Indian Ocean outpost from COMO Hotels and Resorts, the company behind Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos.

To hole up here is to discover escapism, or sweet serenity under a reliable sun. It is a special place, at one remove from the noise of modern living, where we nurture every need, attend to every detail, and soothe away the stresses which belong to another life.

Scattered pearls across an ink-blue sea!

Cocoa Island is located in the Maldive Islands, each a perfect smudge of white. Here, in the quiet waters of the Indian Ocean the strongest winds are gentle breezes, and the highest points, leaning palm fronts. Each lagoon is a point of stillness, but the encircling reefs bristle with life.

Our private island resort is found in the less developed South Male Atoll, a 40-minute speedboat ride from the international airport.

On the west side lies the Kandooma Channel, considered to be one of the best dive sites in the Maldives; on the other side is a quiet reef for snorkelling flanked by a curl of rockless beach which tapers into a spit of sand. This is as long as the island, disappearing with the advance of the Maldivian tide.

On arrival at Male international airport, you will be met by our hotel staff and transferred to the resort - a 30km journey south to Cocoa Island, locally known as Makunufushi.

Catch the scent of spices in the pure salt air

At Cocoa Island, eat like a castaway - fresh lobster, caught locally, cooked in the Keralan style. Dine feet-in-the-sand at the main restaurant, Ufaa, beneath an alang-alang pavilion and huge Maldivian sky.

Menus change daily, blending Indian and Sri Lankan traditions with an emphasis on seafood, tandoor and organic, locally-sourced produce. Spicing is used with a lightness of touch. Choice is always tantalising, promising simplicity in the tropics, and sophistication for the more demanding gourmand.

There is also a hotel bar, Faru, open from 10am until midnight, serving fine wines, exotic cocktails and energising juices.

At Cocoa Island, we provide comprehensive room service menus, as well as a healthful COMO Shambhala cuisine.

COMO SHAMBHALA CUISINE: With COMO Shambhala cuisine, guests can benefit from a wide and changing variety of menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as room service) which focus on nutritionally enriching and organic foodstuffs.

The emphasis is on raw ingredients, which are more easily digested as well as richer in living enzymes, vitamins and sea minerals.

We don't use cow's milk, nor genetically tampered soy alternatives, but our own blended nut milks. We use honey instead of processed sugars. We also use sea vegetables high in nutrients, including magnesium and pumpkin seed 'parmesan' which replaces the flora found naturally in the intestine but is destroyed by cooking. Fish is an important feature on our menus - caught and brought straight to your plate.

COMO Shambhala cuisine is not about deprivation; it's for people who enjoy their food but want to feel good.

COMO SHAMBHALA RETREAT: A sanctuary where mind, body and spirit are nurtured holistically

Cocoa Island attends to guests' needs at a deeper level, courtesy of the COMO Shambhala Retreat. We offer healing traditions from Asia with natural therapies from the sea and earth, honed by international health consultants.

It is a place where wellness is nurtured in simple wooden beach houses, aired by breezes carrying the scent of the ocean.

This holistic approach is coupled with expert yoga tuition, which includes week-long retreat weeks led by world-renowned specialists. Couple with our signature health-giving cuisine, and feel the benefits of a complete return to real wellbeing.

At COMO Shambhala, we believe in balance - of mind, body and spirit - and the inspiration of the soul, afforded by a place of beauty.

PATHS FOR WELLNESS: COMO Shambhala Retreat is Cocoa Island’s holistic spa, a point of stillness where guests can rediscover a sense of balance.

We value the holistic existence, and consider nature to be the greatest healer of all.

We have prepared a series of “paths” comprising suggested treatments that will assist in achieving the mind-body balance suited to your needs.

Expect gentle cossetting in a blissful wilderness

Rooms are inspired by dhoni boats, as used by local fishermen, adjoined by simple wooden walkways built above the shallow ocean. Each is its own discreet fiefdom. From your room, walk out on to a private terrace; from your terrace, slip into a warm Maldivian sea.

The view from the wide platform bed is directly out to the watery expanse. And the bathrooms, all with double sinks, a bath and shower, share the horizon views.

Guest room amenities include the following:

Beds with handmade Italian linen, private sun deck with loungers and dining table, bathtub and separate shower stall, air conditioning, antique colonial ceiling fan, minibar and snacks, tea and coffee making facilities (Lavazza Espresso maker), complimentary bottled water and fresh fruit daily, satellite TV (42" LCD TVs) and CD player with DVDs, complimentary WiFi, international direct dial telephone with modem port, COMO Shambhala bathroom amenities, hairdryer, private safe, resort bag and flip flops.

Particularly popular are the beach drop-offs, dolphin and sunset cruises, allowing guests to indulge in the natural solitude of empty beaches and mirror-flat horizons.

Yet the still lagoon bristles with life.

Diving in the Maldives is rated among the best in the world. Cocoa Island is located in a quiet atoll where the waters are undisturbed, ensuring extraordinary colour close to hand.

We have an on-site dive centre staffed by PADI certified instructors catering to every level of experience. You can rent equipment, enrol on PADI sanctioned diving courses, visit the house reef or take part in night dives. Boat dives visit more than 20 different dive sites in the area. Our safari dives explore even further afield.
